For years, TV adverts and media subliminal messages have been portraying mothers as the super momma. The Wonder Woman expectation has become a prison for every Egyptian lady out there. Let’s take a look at DC Comics’ heroine Wonder Woman. Princess Diana of Themyscira is the epitome of an indestructible protagonist. Wonder Woman was blessed with two magical weapons; The Lasso of Truth ( a lie detector) and a pair of indestructible bracelets to absorb the impact of incoming attacks.
The Egyptian society insists on molding women into a Wonder Woman and gives itself the right to continuously judge and evaluate her. The society expects from a human being to portray a gifted miracle with supernatural powers. It’s true not all women are joining the army, but we face daily wars when it comes to raising kids, fixing a broken marriage, and maintaining a career.
It all starts during childhood when kids are raised to be perfectionists. They have to get straight A’s and excel in sports. We believe that girls have to be raised in a way that suits the role of a mother, and we also treat girls differently than their brothers when it comes to personal choices. We expect her to say yes to the male figure in her life because he knows better!
This explains the false implementation of motherhood we see nowadays in most families where women are paying the price. This Egyptian Wonder Woman is expected to please whoever can cross your mind; a husband, in-laws, a stranger who doesn’t want to see her with red lipstick because it seduces him. Moreover, she takes care of it all; she works, cooks, drops her kids off at sports training, and brings the plumber to fix the sink. She ends up being drained while trying to do everything that is expected from her.
Here are five superwomen we expect Egyptian ladies to be:
A sexy model
It doesn’t end with celebrities. Go through Instagram for five minutes and you will feel bad about your body, hair, weekend outing, and summer vacation. Women are competing with the sexiest pregnancy bellies out there and the fact that they lost belly fat immediately after delivery. It’s like a competition you can never win because by the time you master one beauty trend, it’s already outdated and time for another.
A master chef
Remember the time when cooking mahshi was considered a mission. It’s not enough anymore, women make homemade sushi nowadays! You expect to be thanked for cooking a hot nutritious meal for your family after a sleepless night, but you’re pressured into making a fancy breakfast on a wooden cutlery set because of some Instagram story.
A parenting expert
We all meet the mother who screams at her toddler in a mall and we end up judging her. We forget to give excuses, to put ourselves in her shoes, and to understand that this mother is trying her best.
Amina to her Si Sayed
Actually, this is the worst wonder woman of all. She is the classic example of replacing a real woman with a barbie doll. This 2020 Amina is not just the typical submissive wife, she is a happiness maker, always standing on her tiptoes for her master’s satisfaction.
A career guru
Of course all of the previously mentioned stereotypes are not enough if you’re a stay-at-home mother or a working mother with a normal job. You must be an achiever in your career or at least an entrepreneur.
Mamas, we raise future men and women.
It’s time to end the stereotype.
