I can’t believe that we’re in 2021 and while we’re trying to promote body positivity and self love, schools still discriminate against children based on their hair! Yes, you heard that right, her hair.
A Facebook post has gone viral after the father of the child Marley Morkos Adel was denied acceptance at a school interview because the school had an issue with her hair!
‘My daughter’s educational level was really good in both English and Arabic, but the teacher came out to say that the problem was with her hair,” the child’s father, Marco Adel explains.
“ I looked at my daughter to see if there was a problem with her appearance or clothing because I didn’t understand, but the teacher held my daughter’s curls and said ‘The problem is with her hair. Her hair isn’t nice.’ Marco continues.
Mind you, this all happened in front of the child! Not only is the school judging based on a child’s appearance, but they also caused her to feel rejected, bullied and that there is something wrong with her appearance. According to the father, Marley went home really upset and in shock.
How can a school allow themselves to judge whether or not a student is fit based on their appearance? When their educational level and behavioural skills are fine, but she gets rejected because of her curls, this is completely unacceptable!
Shame on you Maria Ausilia School!
The school issued an official statement saying that the child was not rejected because of her hair and that the photo circulating on Facebook even shows that she was accepted. As per their statement, the teacher never commented on her hair being curly, but just mentioned that it needed to be tamed and brushed as expected from a catholic school.
