Not all superheroes wear capes. An Egyptian student has managed to change an entire curriculum to delete a single degrading term. Sama Ramy, a college student with Down syndrome, made a request to the Minister of Higher Education, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, asking for the term Mongolian Idiocy to be deleted from the university’s curriculum.
The request was immediately taken into consideration and has been approved. This is not the first time the advocate for Down syndrome takes a stand against stigmatization. It all started when the 17-year-old girl was denied a chance to study in a tourism secondary school due to her condition which led her to start a Facebook fan page where she started sharing her journey.
During her high school years, the student noticed that biology textbooks have been using the term Mongolian Stupidity since the early 1950s. Ramy wrote a social media post for the Minister of Education, Tarek Shawky, asking for the degrading term to be removed from all textbooks and her request was approved by the ministry.
The Sociology student at Faculty of Arts, Cairo University, has reportedly messaged officials at the Ministries of Education and Culture to launch awareness campaigns to alter Down syndrome’s social perception. Keep fighting for your rights, Sama!
