As we grow older, we carry more responsibilities and each stage in our lives carries different problems and obstacles we may face. Worrying and planning for the future is normal, but when you reach the extent that you are unable to carry on with your normal life or you feel paralyzed, then you must find ways to overcome your anxiety or overthinking.
You could be starting a new job, getting married, moving to a new house, or be pregnant. At first, you may be excited about your new life change, but then negative thoughts may start taking over your brain such as “What if they don’t like me in my new job?”, “What if my neighbors turn out to be mean?” ,“I’m pregnant, how will I be a mother? I can’t do it.”
It is normal to feel anxiety or overthink from time to time especially if you have a stressful life or job. However, overthinking is extremely exhausting, not only on your mental health, but on your physical health as well. While it may seem hard to overcome anxiety, there are ways to make things better and help your mind stop overthinking.
Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure.
Here are the top tips to overcome overthinking/anxiety:
- Write down your thoughts
- Identify your triggers
- Stay healthy
- Practice mindfulness
- Seek therapy if needed
Write down your thoughts
Keeping a journal is a form of self-therapy as it helps you identify what may be triggering your anxiety or what causes you to overthink.
Meditation helps your mind and body relax. It will help you take your mind off any current negative thoughts which will help you relax.
Identify your triggers
Certain situations or factors may trigger your anxiety/overthinking as a certain phobia, trauma, a job, or a certain person. Identifying what triggers your anxiety may help you eliminate these certain factors.
Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle will help improve your general mood which is important in coping with anxiety/overthinking.
Exercising and exerting physical effort can help release hormones which help trigger positive feelings/thoughts.
People usually tend to overthink about things that may happen in the future, mindfulness means focusing on the present and becoming aware of your thoughts for the time being. Practicing mindfulness will help you focus your attention on current issues and not overthink about future.
Seek therapy if needed
If you feel like your anxiety is taking over, it is important to seek a therapist for guidance and to teach you the process of overcoming your anxiety.
