In every phase of our lives, our bodies undergo changes that sometimes we don’t even realize. When it comes to hair and skin, there are many factors that occur in a woman’s life that can contribute to changes in the properties of hair and skin and lead to acne, hair loss, or hair shedding. Here are a few changes some women can experience in their hair and skin in their 20s and 30s:

Acne in your 20s and 30s
One of the main reasons for acne is hormonal changes linked to your menstrual cycle. If you find yourself flaring up in your 20s and 30s, it is probably due to androgens such as testosterone that are produced in small amounts around the ovaries, adrenal glands, and skin. This leads to the lining of the pores in the skin being sticky, building up keratin, and clogging up a pore, or producing a pimple.
Hormonal acne that appears before your cycle is more common in your 30s, especially after age 33 compared to women in their 20-33. Here are a few tips to help you deal with acne breakouts:
- Use combined oral contraceptives that help reduce androgen production.
- Use skin care products containing retinoids. These vitamin A-derived products have anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce the production of clogged pores that lead to acne formation.
- Use cleansers with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, LHA, or glycolic acid.
- Use photoprotection products to prevent long-lasting acne scars on the skin and choose a high SPF for oily skin.

Hair changes in your 20s and 30s
As you grow older, hair density tends to decrease but starts to become noticeable in women by the age of 40. This is usually a result of factors such as genetics, age, hormonal changes, and environmental factors that affect hair thinning. However, some women are more prone to hair loss as a result of pregnancy, diseases, or hormonal changes. Here are a few causes of hair thinning for women in their 20s and 30s:
Pregnancy
Pregnancy boosts the production of estrogen which actually helps form fuller and thicker hair. However, after pregnancy, hormones return to their normal levels which results in rapid hair shedding.
Female androgenetic alopecia
Another reason hair can thin in your mid-30s is a result of the reduction of the size of the hair follicles due to an increased level of androgens in the body. It is obvious in the scalp and the crown of the head. It also comes with other symptoms such as increased acne, hirsutism, irregular periods, and infertility.
Traction alopecia
When the hair is pulled for a long period of time such as when braiding, it can lead to traumatic hair loss such as traction alopecia. The hair loss is visible in the areas where the hair tension is higher. Another example is using chemical treatments to straighten the hair.
Anemia
One of the reasons women with anemia experience hair loss and thinning is the decreased levels of hemoglobin in the blood which is essential for hair growth. By taking iron supplements and following an iron-rich diet, your chances of restoring your hair growth to normal levels increase.
Thyroid disorders
A fluctuation in certain hormones in the body as a result of thyroid disorders can lead to hair loss and sometimes even hair greying. If you have an increased or decreased level of thyroid hormones, you’re probably prone to hair thinning and early hair greying.
