With the first week of Ramadan ending, the Egyptian media gets its own drama after one of the Ramadan mosalsalat, Al Tawoos, is being accused of using foul, inappropriate language that does not match the codes issued by The Supreme Council of Media Regulation. Not only that, but ‘Al Tawoos’ is also being accused of tainting the values of Egyptian families and displaying inappropriate, degrading issues that offend the family image.

Al Tawoos Ramadan TV Series
Al Tawoos, staring Gamal Suleiman, Sahar El Sayegh, and Samiha Ayoub, addresses the issue of sexual harassment in Egypt. It was one of the first of its kind to address a social issue in Ramadan and use art to convey a message and raise awareness about an issue happening in Egypt.

The Supreme Council for Media Regulation is conducting an immediate investigation with the production team behind ‘Al Tawoos’ as well as the officials of the channels displaying it on the basis of receiving numerous complaints. Ramadan series are expected to adhere to the media codes as well as avoid subjecting the Egyptian family or family values to any prejudice. While the series is currently under investigation, it is at the stake of being discontinued.
Looking at the different series presented this Ramadan, how does ‘Al Tawoos’ compare to the other works of art in terms of portraying Egyptian family values? Do you feel that this is the only series that portrays an abnormal family image or are there other series that are doing the same? Is this decision by the Supreme Council fair or should the media be allowed to bring forward issues in their creative and artistic performances?
Let us know in the comments whether you’re with or against this decision.
