Living in a patriarchal society, we always feel that men are sexist towards women. We try to fight for our rights and teach our boys about equality and how a better world would be in hopes of our daughters one day by getting a fair chance. However, it’s not just men who discriminate against women, but many women tend to be sexist towards women, too!
You’d think that women would be on the same team, always having each other’s backs, and couching for each other but according to Leqqa Ali’s viral Facebook post, this was not the case she faced.
“I had an interview in a company that supposedly empowers women and promotes itself as a feminine platform,” Ali explains.
When she arrived, she found that most of the team consisted of females and that the HR was a decent and polite woman. While there were many applicants, the HR asked Ali to stay for a second interview with the Art Director.
“After a long conversation, the Art Direction asked me if I was married,” Ali shares as she explains that this question took her by surprise.
“Yes, I am,” She replies. To her shock, the Art Director asks her about her pregnancy plans continuing the rest of the interview. While Ali was stunned with the questions, she replied and then was asked to wait outside by the HR.
“While I was waiting, a 40-year-old woman entered the HR’s room. I overheard the HR telling her that they had found an appropriate candidate and need her approval before hiring her,” Ali shares.
To Ali’s utter shock and disbelief she hears the older woman responding,” She’s married? We can’t handle that kind of hassle.”
As soon as Ali heard those words, she took her stuff and left. But it goes to show that it’s not just men who are sexist.
It’s not just men who discriminate against women.
It’s not just men who expect women to fail or bring them down because of their gender.
It’s the culture and society that need to change.
It’s the perception of women’s abilities and a woman’s place in society that need to change.
It’s the thought, even by women, that men will do better.
Sexism and discrimination are all around us, but instead of just fighting men, we need to fight the system and educate both men and women in order to see changes.
