Autism is a spectrum disorder that is characterized by struggling with social skills, repetitive behaviors, as well as speech and non-verbal communication. If you’re worried about your child and suspect that they might be on the spectrum, there are a few signs to look out for that can help you identify autism through the way a child plays.
Watch the video below and see what behavioral signs to keep an eye on when your child is playing:
Cars
Every child plays with cars, but it’s the way that a child plays that can indicate that something might be wrong. In the video above, growth and communications specialist through games, Nagwa Khedr, explains possible red flags.
Bubbles
Children love to pop bubbles, even adults enjoy it! But if your child only likes to watch the bubbles being blown and doesn’t try to pop them, this could be a sign of autism. In her video, Khedr explains the autism signs to look out for when playing with bubbles.
Recreating scenes
It’s normal for a child to create scenes with their toys, animals, and cars. But what if your child is creating the same scene over and over again? The repetition of the same scene and placing toys in exactly the same spots can be a sign of autism.
Closing and opening objects repetitively
Doing the same thing repetitively can be a worrying sign of autism. If you find your child opens and closes the door over and over again for a long period of time, then you should consider visiting a specialist. The same applies to opening and closing windows, lids, or any motion that is repetitive.
Going around in circles
Have you ever played dizzy dinosaurs when you were younger? If you haven’t, it’s such a fun game! Children love to go around in circles until they get dizzy, but while they do that, they always scream or laugh or show some kind of emotion. If you find your child spinning without getting tired or showing any emotions, then this could be a sign of autism, too.
