Most girls dream of being moms ever since they were kids. Women tend to be impatient with pregnancy which leads to stress. Not to mention the Middle Eastern society pressuring women to get married and have children before the age of 30. The whole family is involved in the decision -not only the husband and the wife- causing extreme pressure.
In this article, we tackle some things you have to avoid while trying to get pregnant. However, rule number one is to avoid stress. Research has shown that stress makes it more difficult to conceive. Stress also can cause hormonal disturbances that will affect ovulation and fertility.
Things to avoid while trying to conceive:
- Excessive weight change
- Intense workouts
- Unhealthy food
- Skipping sex during the fertile window
Excessive weight loss or gain
A study conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information has shown a close relation between weight loss or gain and infertility. The study showed that 12% of infertility is due to being underweight, while 25% is due to being overweight. This shows that body fat affects the menstrual cycle.
Women who are underweight or overweight have longer periods which limits their chances of getting pregnant. When trying to conceive, seek a body mass index (BMI) not below 20 and not above 27.
Research regarding the relation between caffeine consumption and fertility claims different results. However, one study indicated that excessive caffeine consumption is associated with infertility. You don’t need to cut out caffeinated drinks completely, but you have to limit your intake to 1 to 2 cups per day if you’re trying to get pregnant.
While moderate physical exercise is generally recommended for a healthy body, a study conducted on 3,628 women aged between 18-40 has shown that high intensity workouts negatively affect fertility and prolong the time taken to conceive. Vigorous exercise might cause hormonal changes that, in turn, will affect the release of eggs and the regularity of the menstrual cycle. The study excluded overweight and obese women.
There is no dispute regarding the harmful effects of smoking on overall health. However, smoking causes damage to the ovaries resulting in fewer eggs which reduces the chances of pregnancy. Besides, it can cause ectopic pregnancy.
While there is no evidence that certain foods increase fertility, research has indicated that high consumption of fast food, trans fats, and refined carbs may increase infertility.
Skipping sex during the fertile window
The fertile window is the most fertile timing in your menstrual cycle that includes five days prior to ovulation and the day of the ovulation. The timing of sexual intercourse in relation to ovulation strongly influences the chances of conception. To keep track of your ovulation, count your cycle days.
