Giving birth is an absolute miracle; not only have you created a baby inside of you, but you’ve also gone through the magical process of a baby coming out of your body. Because the baby comes out of the cervix, it is natural for the vagina after birth to undergo certain changes. A postpartum vagina could feel sore, wider, dry, or require you to do certain things to help the vagina recover faster post-delivery.
Here are some of the vaginal changes that you might notice after birth:
Wider vagina

When you give birth, your cervix dilates to be ready for a 3-4 kg baby to pop out. This can make the vagina feel looser, softer, and more open after birth. You could even feel that it is bruised or swollen. To help speed up the healing process you can perform kegel exercises to tighten the vagina after natural birth.

Another significant change you might realize is a dry vagina after birth. This is due to the reduction in the hormone oestrogen in the body in comparison to when you were pregnant. If you’re breastfeeding, you’ll realize an even dryer vagina; however, once you’re back to your normal periods and have stopped breastfeeding, the oestrogen levels will return to pre-birth.
Soreness in the vaginal area

There’s a possibility for your vagina to tear during childbirth which can make it feel extremely painful or sore. This could take between 6-12 months to heal, especially if you do not perform pelvic floor exercises to help you recover faster. If the pain is intense and unbearable, be sure to visit your doctor, as they could prescribe pain killers that help with the soreness or pain.

You should give your vagina and body a chance to rest and recover after giving birth. But if you feel you’re ready to have sex again, you could find yourself experiencing pain during sex. If the pain is due to vaginal dryness, try using a lubricant. However, if you feel you’re still experiencing pain during sex, you should visit your health professional.
