This week, Vodafone announced that it will be adopting a new global policy that aims at supporting family rights by enforcing -drum rolls please- paternity leaves to eligible Vodafone employees worldwide. Of course news like this left us in awe!
While many mothers in Egypt and across the globe struggle with inflexible work policies after giving birth and not getting a full maternity leave as standardized by the International Labor Organization (ILO), Vodafone surprised the world by respecting international standards as well as the wellbeing of its employees.
Vodafone now offers new fathers a paid paternity leave of 16 weeks, during the first 18 months of their newborns’ lives. A dream come true? That’s not even the best part, Vodafone also eased the return of new fathers to work by enforcing a policy requiring 30 hours of work per week instead of the standard 40 hours for a duration of six months after returning from paternity leave.
“By the end of March 2021, Vodafone’s parental leave will be available to all non-birthing parents – regardless of their gender, sexual orientation or length of service – across Vodafone’s 24 markets and operations in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the US,” Vodafone announced.
Vodafone redefined inclusion and diversity and adopted gender equality. Men and women will now get to spend time with their newborns, even parents of newly-adopted children and new parents through surrogacy.
Paternity leave is indeed important for both the child and the mother. The presence of the father is translated into physical and emotional support to the mother, which in return reflects on her physical health, emotional and mental wellbeing. It also encourages the child-parent bond, which is the essence of the safety and security of a baby.
We are greatly thrilled to see this being implemented in Egypt, and we hope that every multinational company follows Vodafone’s lead, and change the world one step at a time.
